House renovation can appear glamorous when you consider the end result, but the process is messier than you can imagine.

Living in a building site is taken quite literally during the process of a renovation as the house can end up in chaos. If preparation has not been carried out, even the smallest of renovations can result in dust and damage to the rest of the home. However, it’s easy to lessen the disruption and keep the dust at bay.

Isolate The Work

When renovating, try to focus on one room at a time. By doing so, you will isolate the work and the chaos to one area at a time. Hence, the dust, the noise and the disruption will be kept to a minimum meaning keeping a clean and tidy home will be more manageable.

If possible, carry out some of the work outside on dry days as this will keep the mess at bay and paint and chemicals out of your home.

Wear Protective Clothing During House Renovation

Dust collects anywhere and everywhere. So, if you’re walking through the home during the renovation, the dust will cling to you. Moreover, just like it does to the floors and furniture.

Disposal overalls and protective shoe covers can help in preventing the dust from sticking to your clothes and shoes, and it being walked into other rooms. Moreover, these are cheap and easy to buy from DIY stores.

Protect The Home Too

Not only does dust and dirt cling to you, but it will cling to your furniture and flooring too. In some circumstances, new carpet may be put down before the walls have had a fresh lick of paint. Hence, putting down protective carpet film or dust sheets is a must to ensure the flooring is protected. Dust sheets can also cover any furniture that is staying in the room too.

Despite uPVC windows being low-maintenance and durable, they still need cleaning.

Over time windows become dusty on the inside, and the glass can show streaks. On the outside, the uPVC can become marked, and the glass can become dirty.

Cleaning your windows often can help them to stay looking like new. Check out our guide on how to clean uPVC windows.

How To Clean uPVC Windows

Vacuum the sills and frames – open the window as far as possible and then use the soft brush on the hoover to vacuum up any dust or grime that has collected on the window sill and in the grooves of the frame. Be careful not to scratch the window frame or the glass.

Wipe down the glass and frames – mix warm water with diluted washing up liquid and then use a soft cloth to wipe down the window frame and the glass. The sills may also need wiping. Make sure you don’t use an abrasive cloth or scourer that could scratch or damage your window.

Dry the window – use a dry, soft cloth or tissue roll to dry the window and remove any water or streaks.

Other Hints And Tips

You may find that specialised window cleaner works better on glass than warm water and washing up liquid! Simply squirt the cleaner over the panes and wipe them down. Try not to leave any streaks or marks, and make sure to get into each corner too.

Furthermore, you may also find that hiring a window cleaner to keep on top of your external panes saves you time. Moreover, this way, you’ll know that your windows will be looking sparkly clean all the time – and you’ll only have to worry about cleaning internally.

If you stay on top of cleaning your windows, they’ll stay looking new and modern for years to come!

Surrounding yourself with clutter at home can make you feel unorganised and negative.

However, the thought of having to declutter your home can often make you put up with the mess instead. Here are five simple steps to help you to declutter your home!

Declutter Your Home One Room At A Time

Have you ever started a task and later wished you hadn’t? Well, don’t let this happen when you declutter your home. The last thing you want to do is try to tackle the whole house in one go. Your belongings will end up everywhere, and your patience won’t last very long.

Set yourself goals. Write yourself a to-do list. Aim to declutter your home one room at a time. Try to tackle one room each week or a few rooms each weekend. Focusing on one room at a time will help you have a clearer image as you start to declutter your home. Furthermore, you will have a better idea of how you’re going to organise your belongings too!

Declutter Your Home By Piling And Bagging

As you get going, you’ll start creating ‘keep’ piles and ‘bin’ piles, and ‘charity shop’ piles and ‘not sure’ piles. Piling everything up can cause mayhem in the middle of the room. You’ll begin to lose sight of what you’re keeping and throwing. Furthermore, you’ll end up with the same clutter but in a different part of the room.

Grab a bin bag and get throwing what you don’t want in there. Another bin bag can hold whatever you’re taking to the charity shop or rehoming.

Declutter Your Home Brutally

It can be hard to declutter your home when you’re attached to your belongings. You won’t want to throw away things that carry meaning to you. However, you must be honest. Are you going to use those items again? Ask yourself when you last used them and whether they’ll get used again.

If you can’t bring yourself to get rid of something, find a way of storing the sentimental items safely instead. For example, if you keep an old newspaper for one article, try cutting it out and putting it in a frame or a scrapbook instead.

Declutter Your Home And Get Digital

Let’s be honest. We’ve all got old VHS tapes and a rack full of CDs but no CD player. Moreover, we’ve probably all subscribed to film, TV series and music streaming companies too. Furthermore, every book you own is more than likely available as an e-Book instead. So, as lovely as your filled bookcase looks, do you need it?

Immerse yourself in the same entertainment that you love, but go digital instead.

Storage Ideas

So you’ve pretty much done the tricky bit. You’ve sifted through your clutter. Now you’re left with what you’re keeping. Instead of shoving them back where they were before, invest in vacuum packs. These devices can shrink down and slot into smaller places, like under your bed or in cupboards.

If you have any storage boxes, you could start filling these as a more permanent storage solution. Moreover, storage boxes are great for housing things you want to keep but don’t need yet.

However, if you find that lots of your old things remain, or you can’t bring yourself to let go of them yet, why not rent a storage unit? A lot of storage units are available in different sizes and for different prices. You can access them almost whenever you need to. Think of it as a home from home.

Summary

This guide is all you need to declutter your home. Don’t forget to separate your stuff into ‘keep’, ‘bin’ and ‘charity shop’ piles. Be brutal when getting rid. However, don’t forget there are always other ways to store your belongings tidily.
