Several years ago, curtains were much more popular than blinds. But in this modern age, blinds have more choice and flexibility than curtains. Moreover, this is why blinds are a favourable choice.

However, with more choice comes more responsibility in making the right decision. So, this handy guide will help you to choose which blind is best for your home.

Vertical Window Blinds

Widely considered the most popular of blinds, verticals offer homeowners control. Vertical blinds tilt left and right and can alter the amount of natural light entering a room. Furthermore, these blinds can make a room more or less private dependent on the direction of the tilt.

As well as tilting, vertical blinds can drawback to expose the window. Because of this, these blinds are most popular in conservatories and patios.

Moreover, these types of blinds are available in various patterns and colours. Therefore, they can match any room.

Venetian Blinds

As opposed to Vertical, Venetian blinds are horizontal slats. Akin to Vertical, these slats can tilt to control light and privacy. Venetian blinds can raise upwards to expose the window.

Venetian blinds are usually more expensive than vertical blinds. However, Venetians are more durable and practical.

Homeowners tend to use Venetians in kitchens and bathrooms. Moreover, the window can be accessed and opened, meaning the blinds can be drawn out of the way to allow ventilation.

Roller Window Blinds

In recent years, roller blinds have become more popular. They consist of a single panel of fabric that rolls up or down as appropriate.

This type of blind is available in most colours and most patterns to match your existing decor. Roller blinds can also come in blackout material, so they are ideal for bedrooms.

Roman Blinds

Roman window blinds are similar to roller blinds. However, when raised, they pleat to create a more luxurious feel to a room. They are easy to use and are versatile. Roman blinds are available in various colours and patterns and look stylish when fitted.

Other Types Of Window Blinds

The abovementioned blinds are the most popular types. However, other alternatives are on the rise, including blinds that have a motor. These can control your lighting and privacy easier, at the touch of a button. Motorised Roller and Roman blinds are available, but these are expensive.

Summary

Window blinds are much more popular than curtains in the modern-day. Furthermore, blinds are more versatile, durable and budget-friendly too. Moreover, they are suitable for every room in the house!

Kitchen extensions are one of the most popular building projects for homeowners.

There are several varieties of the kitchen extension. From combining adjoining rooms to re-building the kitchen. Or from adding a conservatory to building down into the basement.

Creating A Thoughtful Kitchen Extension Layout

A lot of kitchen extensions are now open-plan and extend into the back garden. They can often take inspiration from orangeries.

Extending to the side can also be beneficial when you want to keep your garden space.

One kitchen extension idea is to utilise storage space. Large, tall cupboards can create plenty of useable storage. Open shelving systems ensure the items you most often use are to hand when you need them – ideal for family homes.

Extending Into The Outside

Expansive glass doors and skylights can help to fill the space with natural light. Thus, bringing the outside indoors.

Kitchen extensions benefit from losing a wall and installing glass panels or doors. Sliding or bi-folding doors can open the space to unite the two areas in summer and allow plenty of natural light in winter.

A seamless flow into the garden can prevent a small kitchen from feeling enclosed. Instead, the kitchen extension feels open and airy.

Mixing Materials In Your Kitchen Extension

Leaving bricks exposed on the inside will give your extension character and warmth. Irregularity of colour and texture will pick up other tones throughout the room too.

Splashes of colour to the furnishings and even to the wall can lift the kitchen extension too.

As an alternative, you could unify with a theme. Another kitchen extension idea is to use a single material throughout to keep an open feel. For example, wood works well in a country kitchen. A breakfast bar, seating area and dining space can all incorporate and unite the scheme.

Creating A Multi-Purpose Space

More and more people are now living, dining and working from their kitchens. The open-plan kitchen is the epicentre for modern living in new builds and period homes.

You could create distinct and separate zones for cooking, dining and relaxing. Use a central island to divide the room, or add a breakfast bar to make the space more social. Kitchens can have colour-coded areas to reflect the multi-function of the living space.

Summary

Kitchen extensions can cost a lot of money and take time, thought and consideration. Yet, they have the potential to transform your home. They can boost your floorspace and have the potential to increase your home’s value. After all, kitchens are the heart of our home.

Condensation Usually Occurs During Winter

Humidity often causes a build-up of condensation. Conservatories carry a lot of hot air. Hence, this can create water vapour and put water droplets on cold windows. Because of this, conservatories often have a build-up of condensation during the winter.

There are various ways to avoid the build-up of condensation in your conservatory. One way is to improve ventilation. Opening windows is useful. Dehumidifiers will help to extract the moisture from the air too.

Desiccant Dehumidifiers For Condensation In Conservatories

Conservatory temperatures often drop below 20c on an evening. Desiccant dehumidifiers are best suited to removing moisture in conservatories.

Moreover, compressor dehumidifiers are less effective below 20c. Furthermore, desiccant dehumidifiers are usually lighter and quieter. They contain hardly any compressor parts.

Dehumidifier Drainage From Condensation In Conservatories

As evenings are cold throughout winter, you may need the dehumidifier switched on at night. Hence, this will help to stop the build-up of water droplets on the windows and prevent condensation.

If you are needing your dehumidifier to work during the night, the water tank may become full. Because of this, the dehumidifier may turn off.

Try to attach a hose to the dehumidifier so that the water can bypass the tank and empty it down the drain. This way, you can have your dehumidifier running throughout the night. Furthermore, you won’t have to worry about it turning off.

Dehumidifiers With Timers And Auto-Restart Settings

Dehumidifiers have developed over recent years. Most new dehumidifiers have a timer function that allows you to set what time you would like the dehumidifier to turn on.

With this feature, you can allow the dehumidifier to turn on during the night or whilst you are out during the day. Furthermore, this can help you to save money on your energy bills.

Dehumidifiers sometimes have an auto-restart option. These can remember your current settings after a power-cut or restart. The dehumidifier can then continue to work.

Energy Saving Dehumidifiers

Most new dehumidifiers also have energy-saving features. One feature is that the fan mode can switch on or off in line with the level of humidity in the conservatory.

Moreover, this means that if the humidity rises in the conservatory, the dehumidifier will turn on. Furthermore, it will switch to its settings and bring the moisture levels down to restore the level of humidity.

Summary

Investing in a new dehumidifier will help to maintain the level of humidity and help to get rid of condensation within your conservatory.

Orangeries were typically used for growing orange plants hence the name. Homeowners over the years have fallen in love with the design and space provided by orangeries.

Because of the brickwork of an orangery, it provides the look of a real extension on the side or back of your home. One of the orangery main design features is the rigid columns and flat roof.

Why Should I Consider Purchasing An Orangery?

Previously we have said that one of the best features of having an orangery is that it looks like more of an extension to your property.

Here are our favourite and top 4 benefits of an orangery.

Loads Of Natural Light

Orangeries are a great way to let light enter your home. Designed with large glass panes and window frames allow for more light to enter the orangery. Furthermore, this will make your orangery feel more relaxing and spacious.
